Pregnancy Yoga: What I’m Learning (and Loving) Along the Way
I’m in the process of completing my Pregnancy Yoga Teacher Training at Studio Ma in Oslo, and it’s such a meaningful journey to go through while pregnant myself.
It feels special to learn about pregnancy, birth, and how yoga can support the pregnant body and mind through this big transition — not just as a teacher, but also as someone living it right now.
Something I’ve come to love about pregnancy yoga is that it’s a complete practice in itself. It’s not about simplifying or modifying another type of yoga. It’s its own practice — deeply supportive for the pregnant body, physically and emotionally.
A second thing that really stayed with me is something my teacher, Cathrine Mathiesen, said: instead of asking “Can I keep doing this form of exercise or movement now that I’m pregnant?”, what if we ask “What is the best thing I can do for my body right now?” or “What is the most helpful thing I can offer my body?”
That shift in perspective makes a difference. The practice becomes about care, not restriction. That’s really the essence of pregnancy yoga for me.
Another thing I really appreciate about pregnancy yoga is how community-focused it is. We often practice in a circle and take time before each class to share where we’re at in our pregnancies and how we’re feeling in our bodies. It creates such a sense of trust and connection. And it gives us a reminder that we’re not alone in what we’re going through. Community matters just as much as movement. I think that’s one of the most meaningful things to facilitate in a yoga space.
And finally, something that surprised me: how STRONG this practice is! I expected it to be mostly soft and restorative — and it absolutely is in many ways, because rest is essential. But it’s also full of strength. There’s so much power in this practice, in the body, in the breath. It’s been really nice to feel that strength from the inside out.
I’m excited to keep studying and learning until I complete my training and get my diploma in December. These next months, I’ll be integrating the teachings and practices as I prepare to give birth for the first time in late February.
And in the future, I look forward to sharing these practices with other pregnant individuals, both in groups and 1:1. It feels incredibly meaningful to be doing this work — to learn, embody, and eventually pass it forward 🥰
